color, form, composition & abstraction in painting
'Equilibrium' is a series of classes that explores image-making and the ancient medium of painting through its elemental components — a research into how these components can be holistically integrated into a personal creative practice.
Analogies from nature, physics and art history are used to understand how these elementary components become tools for free and personal expression in images and paint.
This class is designed for anyone who wants to build a solid foundation in painting — whether a complete beginner, or someone with experience who wants to deepen their understanding of the core elements of image-making.
Prior painting experience is not required. What matters is curiosity, a willingness to experiment, and the desire to develop a personal visual language over the 6 weeks.
Each week there is a deep-dive into one of the elemental components of image-making and painting. After a theoretical discourse, this component is explored in practice through painting.
Next to this deep-dive, the classes intend for students to arrive at a personalised visual language through individual coaching sessions. What would you like to reach during the workshop, and how can I help you get there faster?
The goal: to develop an in-depth basic knowledge of painting and image-making so you can fully engage this knowledge in your own projects after the classes have ended.
The past edition ran on 6 Tuesdays: 13, 20 & 27 May — 10, 17 & 24 June 2025. past edition

seppe de roo (°1994) is a visual artist and master graduate in painting from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, based in Brussels. His practice combines painting, video and sculpture with digital techniques, exploring the equilibrium of abstract elements — light, color, form and texture — as a personal visual language.
Within his artistic practice he holistically integrates a pedagogic element through the 'equilibrium' method — making foundational knowledge of image-making accessible through direct coaching of creators.
